“Library of Things” Coming to Emma Clark Library

Setauket, NY – January 10, 2019 –

What if you could convert all of your VHS tapes to digital format without paying someone or buying a machine?

What if you could see a close up of the night stars with your family in your cozy backyard without purchasing a telescope?

What if you could scan all of your important documents in the comfort of your home without owning a scanner?

Now you can, thanks to Emma Clark Library’s “Library of Things!”  Starting in February, the Library will carry non-traditional items for patrons to borrow.  It’s perfect for that one time use or a great way to try out a new item before deciding to purchase one for yourself.  It’s also a wonderful space-saver in your home; a way to rethink whether we need goods that we rarely use.  The library, in general, reduces wasted resources, and this collection will expand upon that concept.  Items don’t sit around your house collecting dust or end up in the trash.

It’s not unusual for the Library to carry items beyond books (think music, movies, and museum passes), and Emma Clark continues to develop this notion of the library as a place for the community.  The “Library of Things” increases sharing and gives people access to equipment and gadgets without the burden of ownership.  Think of it as a “tool library.”  Or learning not just through books, but through experience.

Here is a list of useful items that will be available at Emma Clark:

  • Binoculars
  • Bluetooth Speaker
  • BluRay Player
  • Cricut Explore (DIY cutting machine)
  • Document/Photo Scanner
  • Google ChromeCast
  • Mini LED Portable Projector
  • Osmo Mobile 2 (for filming “on the go”)
  • Portable DVD Player
  • Telescope
  • VHS Converter
  • Wifi Mobile Hotspots

Library cardholders will be able to reserve items ahead of time right from emmaclark.org. Or they may borrow items while at the Library, as long as there is not a hold already placed on the item.  Full descriptions of each item will be available on the website and on the item itself.

Lending equipment is done through the Circulation Desk in the Library’s lobby. Items must be returned to the Circulation Desk (not through the book drop). Borrowers must have a valid adult Emma Clark Library card in good standing. A maximum of 2 items per library card may be borrowed at a time.  Items may be borrowed for 2 weeks.

Consume less, share more, thanks to the Library.

Two Big Events in The Children’s Department at Emma Clark This Winter

Setauket, NY – January 10, 2019 –

Are your kids saying they’re bored? Fight the winter blues, and come to Emma Clark Library for two special events for children of all ages.

Kick off Super Bowl weekend with football-themed festivities on Saturday, February 2.  Simply drop in the Children’s Department at Emma Clark Library between the hours of 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Play games and enter for a chance to win a special raffle prize. The Library staff encourages visitors to wear a shirt or jersey with their favorite football team (but this is not required). Be sure to catch the fun!

During the school’s winter break, Emma Clark will once again be participating in “Take Your Child to the Library Day”, an international movement to raise awareness for libraries.  Stop by on Wednesday, February 20 between 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. for carnival games, face painting, temporary tattoos, balloon sculpting, crafts and more.

Additionally, in keeping with the festivities of “Take Your Child to the Library Day”, each new library card sign-up on February 20 will be entered in a raffle.  You’re never too young for a library card!  Parents can get a card for their young one as soon as they are born and immediately start enjoying the Library’s resources, such as the “Time for Baby” classes.

According to the American Library Association, Americans go to libraries more than three times as frequently as they go to the movies.  “Take Your Child to the Library Day” showcases the significance of libraries as a community hub, a foundation of education, and a source of entertainment and enrichment.  This event encourages parents to take full advantage of their local library and emphasizes the importance of libraries to our future generation.

There is no registration for either of these events, and families with kids of all ages (residents or nonresidents) are welcome. Meet up with friends – or make new ones – at Emma Clark!

If you have any questions, please email kids@emmaclark.org or call 631.941.4080 ext. 123.

Baby, It’s Cold Outside!

Girl shivering in the snow

Need some ideas of what to do when it’s freezing outdoors? You’re in the right place!

– Come to the Library to play – We gave games, toys, and puzzles for all ages, Playstix, and of course the popular train table. Osmo (“Play Beyond the Screen”) is always available for kids and is a combination of a digital experience and tangible play. We also have Imagination Playground (“Big Blue Blocks”) in our program room for kids to play with, whenever a class is not in session.

– Borrow a Playaway Launchpad for your child – These are tablets pre-loaded with educational apps appropriate for your kid. They are 100% secure and do not have Internet connectivity.  Patrons do not have to install parental controls or worry about their children being exposed to unintended or inappropriate content. They now have new, sturdier cases too. Look for the bright orange packaging in the Children’s Department!

– Stay inside and watch movies

    • Our new “Binge Boxes” include 4 – 6 DVDs that share themes such as “Romantic Comedies”, “Based on a Book”, “Sports on Screen”, “Courtroom Drama”, “Family Movie Night”, “Fright Night”, “Classic Films”, “Marvel Superheroes”, and “British Favorites.” You can find them in main reading room.
    • Stream movies directly to your computer, phone, tablet or smart TV through Hoopla or KanopyClick here to get started.

And of course, read a book! (We couldn’t be the Library and not mention that!)

Project Prom Dress: Donation Drive and Boutique at Emma Clark Library

Setauket, NY – January 2, 2019 –

Once the new year begins, many high school students immediately begin planning THE party that culminates their high school journey – prom!  It can be a lot of fun, but it can also be stressful on some because of the high cost.  Emma Clark Library, with the assistance of Three Village residents Kathryn Hunter (teacher) and Irene Berman (retired teacher), are hoping to ease that burden; or to help someone who might just want to “go green” and wear a recycled dress.

Donations

Do you have dresses piling up and taking up space? Don’t let them gather dust in the closet.  This is a great cleaning project for the new year and is an easy way to donate a dress that wouldn’t otherwise be worn again.  The Library is asking the public to search their closets and pick out anything that looks prom appropriate (dresses and accessories). Donation racks will be located in the Library lobby from New Year’s through Valentine’s Day (January 2 – February 14).  All dresses must be in clean, excellent condition with no stains or tears.  Dresses must be brought in on a hanger (hanger to be donated as well).  All sizes, colors, and styles are welcome.  Accompanying accessories (purses, shoes, etc.) are also appreciated. Both residents and non-residents may donate.

Those who bring dresses in are helping a deserving student attend prom.  Don’t let dresses hang in the back of the closet any longer!  Donate a prom dress and make a difference in a young person’s life to help her feel confident, proud, and beautiful!

Boutique

Project Prom Dress will be a “shopping” event held on Saturday, March 9 (snow date Saturday, March 23) in the Vincent R. O’Leary Community Room on the Library’s lower level. Teens, celebrate your prom in style and find THE dress!  Teens are invited to make an appointment for the Prom Dress Boutique, where they may “shop”, try on, and take home one gown (free of charge) from among the dresses that were donated to the Library.  Due to space limitations, each teen may bring one guest to assist them.  Only registered teens are eligible to “shop” and take home a dress.

Appointments will begin at ½ hour intervals between 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Registration for the boutique is required and begins on February 4th for Three Village residents and February 19th for non-residents (if additional spots are still available). There is a limited amount of appointments per time slot, so the public is encouraged to register early.  To reserve your time slot, call 631.941.4080 ext. 127 starting on the aforementioned dates.  Please note that each registrant may take home only one dress.
