Three Projects at Emma Clark Library Honor Veterans
Setauket, NY – October 3, 2018 –
In time for Veterans Day, Emma Clark Library has three programs to honor our United States veterans.
Emma Clark has partnered with the Library of Congress to help preserve our community’s rich history through the Veterans History Project. Library staff members will conduct interviews with U.S. military veterans, from any conflict, who are willing to share their experiences and stories. This initiative was originally started by the Library of Congress in 2000, and Emma Clark is thrilled to assist in creating these firsthand narratives.
Making oral history accessible is a key component to the documentation. Interviews will run from thirty minutes to one hour each and will be recorded at the Library. Completed interviews will be added to the Library’s YouTube channel for public viewing and also archived in the Library of Congress. Participating veterans will receive a personal DVD copy of their interview. For more information, veterans should call the Library’s Adult Reference Desk at 631.941.4080 ext. 127. This is an ongoing program; Emma Clark wants to hear from you and preserve your story.
For the 2nd year, starting Thursday, November 1, Emma Clark will have a Veterans Board, which will be located in the Library’s lobby, to highlight our veterans. The public may bring in a photo of their favorite veteran to the Library’s Circulation Desk or Adult Reference Desk and fill out a quick form about the veteran. Library staff will display the picture on the Veterans Board. The veteran highlighted may be the person them self, a friend, or a family member who served in uniform. The Veterans Board will be exhibited through Wednesday, November 21, and the original photos will be available for pick-up at the Circulation Desk after Monday, November 26.
Kids may also join in honoring our country’s veterans and current troops at the Library. The Children’s Department is offering a volunteer opportunity that has been very successful in the past. “Letters To Our Troops and Veterans” class will be held on Friday, November 9 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. for students in 5th and 6th grades. Participants will earn community service for the class. Registration begins on October 26.

Emma Clark Library Announces Classes Designed for Special Needs Adults
Setauket, NY – September 5, 2018 –
Emma Clark Library is introducing a new pilot program, “All Adults, All Abilities” (or “4A”), classes and events designed for adults with sensory issues, those on the autism spectrum, or those who have other special needs. These activities will be led by teachers and performers who are trained in accessible and inclusive programming.
Library patrons have expressed an interest in programming where adults and their aides or caregivers can enjoy themselves and engage in a relaxed and comfortable environment that meets their developmental needs. Thanks to the generous support from Senator John J. Flanagan and Assemblyman Steve Englebright, Emma Clark is launching this pilot program that will offer fun, educational, and relevant programs that meet the needs of “All Adults, All Abilities.”
“We’re grateful to Senator Flanagan and Assemblyman Englebright for funding that allows us to introduce this important new initiative, which we hope will become an ongoing series,” says Library Director Ted Gutmann. “The Library is uniquely positioned to serve the needs of a wide spectrum of individuals, and this program further strengthens the Library’s commitment to inclusiveness.”
Specifically, for the fall, on Wednesday, October 10 there will be a crafting class in which participants create a Halloween-themed wreath and enjoy fall treats. On Thursday, November 8, students will make candles using different colors and patterns. These classes and events are geared towards adults with special needs, but they are open to all interested adults. Aides or caregivers must accompany participants. Non-residents are also welcome. The public may register for these classes by calling the Library at 631.941.4080. Questions about the program may be directed to Nanette Feder, Nanette@emmaclark.org.
Also, adult volunteers may be needed to assist during these classes. Those who are willing and available to help may contact our adult volunteer coordinator, Carolyn Emerson at Carolyn@emmaclark.org.
In conjunction with the new 4A initiative, all public computers in the Library now provide access to a collection of recommended special education websites for both children and adults.
No one should be prevented from or feel uncomfortable using the Library. It is a place for everyone to learn and feel accomplished, as well as share pleasant and meaningful experiences. This new program will help to ensure that the Emma Clark Library continues to enrich lives and remains a place where everyone in the community belongs.

Emma Clark Library Joins Suffolk County Libraries in “The Great Playdate” & “The Great Give Back”
Setauket, NY – September 5, 2018 –
Suffolk Cooperative Library System is hosting two initiatives this Fall, The Great Playdate and The Great Give Back, and Emma Clark Library is thrilled to be a participant in these wonderful county-wide community events.
The First Annual Great Playdate (“A Day of Fun and Learning at Suffolk County Libraries” – thegreatplaydate.org) will be held on Saturday, September 22. It’s a special day for the youngest patrons and their caregivers to experience the importance of talking, singing, reading, and of course, playing at the Library! Emma Clark will be celebrating with a “Jump for Joy” class for ages 18 months – 5 years old with their parents or caregivers. Registration for Emma Clark patrons opens for this class on September 8. In the afternoon of the 22nd, the playroom will be open for kids of all ages to play with Imagination Playground Blocks (“Big Blue Blocks”), GIANT Connect Four, and crafts. There is no registration required for open play. The public is encouraged to stop by that afternoon!
The Second Annual Great Give Back Day (thegreatgiveback.org) will be held on Saturday, October 13. The mission of the day is to provide opportunities for library patrons to participate in meaningful, service-oriented activities. Emma Clark Library is asking patrons to help support our furry friends. There will be two special youth community service opportunities on that date. Teen volunteers (grades 7 – 12) will make healthy, delicious “no bake” dog treats, along with dog bandanas with heartfelt messages. Kids in grades 5 & 6 will create dog toys. By participating in these classes, volunteers will learn the joy of giving back to others, and they will also earn community service credit. The treats, toys, and bandanas will be donated to local pet shelters and animal rescue and advocacy organizations. Emma Clark Library kids and teens who are interested in these classes should register by visiting emmaclark.org or calling 631.941.4080.
In keeping with the theme of animals, October 13 will be the official kick-off of Emma Clark Library’s Pet Food Drive, which will run through the end of the month. The Library will be collecting new, unopened pet food (both canned and dry), and all are welcome to donate (residents or nonresidents) during Library hours. There will be a table located in the Library’s lobby. Teen volunteers will also help run the drive by picking up food and dropping it off at various locations.
Founded in 1961, the Suffolk Cooperative Library System exists to help local public libraries provide the best in traditional and innovative public library service to all the people of Suffolk County.

“Little Free Library” a Summer Tradition at West Meadow Beach
Setauket, NY – June 25, 2018 –
The Little Free Library at West Meadow Beach has become a summer tradition for Three Village. Emma Clark Library has once again erected the structure, made from recycled materials and maintained by teen volunteers.
As before, there’s no need for a library card or to return a book – this is a “take a book, leave a book” concept hosted by Emma Clark. Library staff and the public contributed books for the sole purpose of the Little Free Library (books are not owned by Emma Clark – don’t return your library books here!). The Little Free Library is located under the pavilion at the beach. There is no need to live in Three Village to share in this give and take project, as long as you are a visitor at West Meadow Beach.
“We are grateful and proud that local teens eagerly volunteer to help us stock and maintain the Little Free Library throughout the summer,” says Teen Librarian, Nanette Feder.
The Town of Brookhaven and Nicole Pocchiare, Environmental Educator, have once again graciously given their consent to host the Little Free Library at the beach. Councilwoman Valerie Cartright supports this literacy initiative for beachgoers and attended the installation.
“This library is a wonderful annual addition to West Meadow Beach,” remarked Councilwoman Cartright. “Many thanks to our student volunteers and dedicated staff of Emma Clark library for providing residents with so many summer reading options across our community.”
As the Little Free Library states on their website, “Little Free Libraries are hand-crafted structures filled with constantly changing collections of books donated and shared by people of all ages and backgrounds.” Their mission is to promote a sense of community, reading for children, and literacy for adults and libraries around the world. Little Free Library was founded in 2010 by Todd H. Bol in Hudson, Wisconsin and established as a nonprofit organization in May 2012. The organization has won numerous awards including the Innovations in Reading Prize from the National Book Foundation, the Movers and Shakers Award from the American Library Association, and the Literacy Award from the Library of Congress. Countless media outlets including USA Today, The Washington Post, and The Huffington Post have named Little Free Library as a global movement.
The Little Free Library at West Meadow Beach is registered on www.littlefreelibrary.org and can be found on the site’s official map of all Little Free Libraries across the United States and worldwide.
Emma Clark Library is thrilled to once again bring this outreach service to the community.

Exciting Changes and Additions to Library’s Museum Pass Collection
Setauket, NY – June 25, 2018 –
Coming this summer, The Long Island Maritime Museum in West Sayville and The Sagtikos Manor in West Bay Shore will be added to Emma Clark Library’s very successful circulating museum pass program. The pass for the Long Island Maritime Museum offers 2 adults and all children (under the age of 12) free admission into the museum. The Sagtikos Manor pass admits 2 adults and 2 children for free.
In addition, 16 of the Library’s 26 museum passes are now printable, which means there’s no need to pick up or drop off passes at the Library. Simply print the passes from home – or come to the Library to print them on a public computer – and go!
The Library is thrilled that these museums and cultural institutions offer print-on-demand passes and hope that more will follow suit for the convenience of patrons.
The successful Museum Passes at Emma Clark circulated 1,312 times from June 2017 – May 2018, approximately 120 times per month. Since its inception in 2013, the service continues to grow in both popularity and offerings for the Three Village community.
Visit www.emmaclark.org/museum-passes for more information or to reserve a pass. Emma Clark Library also sells discounted tickets to the American Museum of Natural History, which may be purchased at the Circulation Desk in the Library’s lobby.
The Long Island Maritime Museum preserves Long Island’s maritime history and heritage for educational purposes.
The Sagtikos Manor was built in 1697, and expanded in 1772 and 1902. The estate served as headquarters for the British Army on Long Island for a brief time during the Revolutionary War.
