Little Valentines: Baby Supplies Drive at Emma Clark Library
Setauket, NY – January 3, 2023 –
Valentine’s Day is not solely about romantic love; it can also be about spreading love for the community, and in particular, for those in need.
In honor of Valentine’s Day and the season of love, individuals may want to donate to Emma Clark Library’s Little Valentines: Baby Supplies Drive from Monday, January 30 – Sunday, February 26. The Library will be collecting new store-bought and hand-made baby clothes, as well as diapers, wipes, pacifiers, toys & other baby-related items for local organizations that help babies and their families. Diapers are one of the most requested items from homeless shelters and organizations, and they are a basic need for caregivers.
A table for the donated items will be located in the Library lobby to the left of the Circulation Desk, and all are welcome to donate (residents or nonresidents) during Library hours. Teen volunteers will be picking up the items and distributing them to various local organizations in need. These junior high and high school students earn community service credit for doing so.
Anyone that has questions about the Drives should contact askus@emmaclark.org. If you live in Three Village, are in grades 7 – 12, and would like to apply to become a Volunteer Teen Transporter, please visit teen.emmaclark.org/teen-transporters.

Annual Winter Reading for Kids and New Program for Teens
Setauket, NY – December 20, 2022 –
Emma Clark Library is encouraging your children to curl up with a few good books this winter through both the Kids and Teen Winter Reading Challenges.
Reading for pleasure is one of the most important lessons for our youth to continue to be lifelong readers and learners. Both programs begin on Monday, January 23 and run through Sunday, March 12. Sign-up is ongoing; there is no need to register by a certain date, as long as it is during that time period. Registration is easily done through Beanstack, an online reading tool and virtual “bookshelf” of all books one has read. There is also an app called Beanstack Tracker.
The Children’s Winter Reading Challenge has a Mo Willems theme and is for babies through 6th graders who live in Three Village. The child may have books read to them or may be reading on their own, depending on their level, and there are specific goals for each reading ability. Starting February 21, all who reach their goal can come into the library to pick up a prize bag, reading certificate, and a ticket for an exciting National Circus Project performance on March 11 from 11:00 a.m. – 12 noon. Additionally, there are raffle prizes, including tickets generously donated by The Rinx, for kids who log into Beanstack each week and complete the weekly activity. For more details and to register for the Children’s Winter Reading Challenge, visit emmaclark.org/kidswinterreading.
This year marks the inaugural Teen Winter Reading Challenge for 7th – 12th graders who reside in Three Village. Junior high and high school students receive a sustainable, literary prize just for registering – a plantable bookmark that is biodegradable and contains wildflower seeds. Plantable bookmarks are made of seed paper, an ecofriendly and zero waste product. The paper is made from post-consumer and post-industrial paper collected from schools and offices and embedded with high-quality wildflower seeds. The seeds are tested for purity to meet the United States Department of Agriculture standard, as well as the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. 70% of the seeds are US native species and all of them are good for our bees.
For each book read, teens will be asked to write a quick “30-Character or More Review.” Once completed, they will be automatically entered into a raffle for two tickets to The Rinx Ice Skating in Hauppauge and Port Jefferson. The more books they read and review, the better their chances of winning a raffle prize. After the Winter Reading Challenge is over, teens who have read and reviewed one book or more are welcome to attend the Winter Reading Wrap-Up Party on Saturday, March 18 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., where they can hang out with other readers, share their favorite books, eat tasty snacks, and decorate a terracotta pot to plant their bookmark in. For more information and to register for the Teen Winter Reading Challenge, visit teen.emmaclark.org/winter-reading-challenge and plant yourself with a good book!
Raffle winners for both Kids and Teen Winter Reading will be announced after March 12.
Emma Clark Library would like to thank The Rinx and The Port Jefferson Photography Club for their donations for the Winter Reading raffle prizes.
Emma Clark Library employees, trustees, and members of their household are not eligible to enter raffles.

Teen Winter Reading – Not too late!

For those in Grades 7 – 12, join our Teen Winter Reading Challenge! It runs from Monday, January 13 – Sunday, March 2.
We have 3 awesome reasons to join:
– Read any books you want!
– Enter to win tickets to the Rinx Ice Skating and YA Books!
– You may “double log” your reading…enter the same book for both Winter Reading and the Teen 100 Books Challenge and earn credit for both challenges!
Click here to register. Registration is ongoing. There is also an app (Beanstack Tracker).
- Fill in the required information, and select “Teen Winter Reading Challenge 2025.”
- Log each book in Beanstack, and write a quick “30-Character or More Review” of what you’ve read.
- For each book review, you will instantly earn a raffle ticket, which you can then enter into the raffle of your choosing (including tickets to The Rinx Ice Skating)! The more you read and review, the better your chances! We will contact the raffle winners after March 2, 2025 when the Winter Reading Challenge has ended.
Winter Reading Challenge FAQs:
What can I read for the Teen Winter Reading Challenge?
Read any book you want – paper books, eBooks, even audiobooks count! If you’d like suggestions, check out the book recommendations in Beanstack, the Booklists on the Emma Clark Teen Page or email your Teen Services Librarian, Emily Ostrander, at emily@emmaclark.org.
How do I earn Raffle Tickets?
It’s simple. All you need to do is write a very brief review of the book you’ve read and enter it into Beanstack. Enter the books you’ve read one at a time into the reading log, and click “yes” when prompted to write a review. Reviews must be at least 30 characters long (which is really only a few words) to earn a raffle ticket. Completed reviews instantly earn raffle tickets which you can then enter into the raffle of your choice (including The Rinx Ice Skating). All raffles are drawn at the end of the challenge. Tickets are accepted up until 11:59pm March 2, 2025. Raffle winners will be alerted the week of March 3.
What’s an “Activity” in Beanstack, and why would I log it?
An activity is anything you do this winter. Logged activities do not earn more raffle tickets, but can be looked back on, just like a digital journal!
What are these “Badges” I’m earning when I write reviews?
Badges are just colorful, virtual stickers you earn for every review you write, in addition to raffle tickets. They are a fun way to keep track of all your hard work!
I want to register for the Teen 100 Books Challenge, in addition to the Teen Winter Reading Challenge. How do I do that?
When you register for the Teen Winter Reading Challenge, you should be prompted to also register for the Teen 100-Book Challenge. If you were not prompted, simply log out, and visit the Beanstack homepage, https://emmaclark.beanstack.org/reader365. Select the Teen 100 Books Challenge from the challenges listed, and follow the registration steps.
How do I “double log” books for both the Teen Winter Reading Challenge and the Teen 100-Books Challenge?
Once you are registered for both the Teen Winter Reading Challenge and the Teen 100 Books Challenge, any time you log a book and write a review, the book will automatically be logged in both challenges. You don’t need to take any extra steps to reap the benefits of both challenges!
Questions? Email teens@emmaclark.org or call 631.941.4080.
