The Helen Stein Shack Book Contest called for teens in grades 7 through 12 who live in the Three Village Central School District to create a children’s picture book. Each entry could be the work of a single author/illustrator or a collaborative effort of an author and an illustrator. The contest was divided into two grade categories, grades 7 through 9 and grades 10 through 12, with one First Prize Winner and one Second Prize Winner selected from each group.
This award is given in memory of Helen Stein Shack by her family. As a teacher, Mrs. Shack was committed to the education of children, and she especially loved literature written for them. She was a frequent visitor to Emma Clark Library where, even in retirement, she kept current with the latest children’s books. The library is grateful to the children of the late Mrs. Shack who have established a substantial endowment with the library to cover the cost of the winning scholarships.
At last year’s ceremony, Assemblyman Steve Englebright remarked, “Part of the genius of this family’s gift: to make an investment into young people.” Emma Clark Library is thrilled to once again honor these talented and creative teens.

“Take Your Child to the Library Day” at Emma Clark Library
Setauket, NY – January 24, 2018 –
For the 3rd consecutive year, Emma Clark Library is participating in an international movement to raise awareness for libraries. On Thursday, February 22 between 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., the Library will be celebrating “Take Your Child to the Library Day” during the school’s winter break.
According to the American Library Association, there are more public libraries than Starbucks in the United States. “Take Your Child to the Library Day” highlights how libraries are vital to the community as sources of education, entertainment, and enrichment. It encourages parents to take full advantage of their local library and pass along that knowledge to their young ones.
At Emma Clark, the day’s festivities include carnival games, face painting, temporary tattoos, balloon sculpting, crafts and more. And of course, everything else that the Library offers on a daily basis – books, audio books, computers, tablets, movies, music, toys, puzzles, and so much more. Last year close to 350 people took part in the celebration here in Setauket!
Additionally, in keeping with the festivities of “Take Your Child to the Library Day”, each new library card sign-up on February 22 will be entered in a raffle. You’re never too young for a library card! Parents can get a card for their child as soon as they are born and immediately start enjoying the library’s resources, such as the “Time for Baby” program.
There is no need to register for “Take Your Child to the Library Day”, and all families are welcome. Meet up with friends – or make new ones – and share your love of libraries with the future generation.
If you have any questions, please email kids@emmaclark.org or call 631.941.4080 ext. 123.
