Little Valentines: Baby Supplies Drive at Emma Clark Library

Setauket, NY – January 3, 2023 –

Valentine’s Day is not solely about romantic love; it can also be about spreading love for the community, and in particular, for those in need.

In honor of Valentine’s Day and the season of love, individuals may want to donate to Emma Clark Library’s Little Valentines: Baby Supplies Drive from Monday, January 30 – Sunday, February 26. The Library will be collecting new store-bought and hand-made baby clothes, as well as diapers, wipes, pacifiers, toys & other baby-related items for local organizations that help babies and their families. Diapers are one of the most requested items from homeless shelters and organizations, and they are a basic need for caregivers.

A table for the donated items will be located in the Library lobby to the left of the Circulation Desk, and all are welcome to donate (residents or nonresidents) during Library hours. Teen volunteers will be picking up the items and distributing them to various local organizations in need. These junior high and high school students earn community service credit for doing so.

Anyone that has questions about the Drives should contact askus@emmaclark.org. If you live in Three Village, are in grades 7 – 12, and would like to apply to become a Volunteer Teen Transporter, please visit teen.emmaclark.org/teen-transporters.

Annual Winter Reading for Kids and New Program for Teens

Setauket, NY – December 20, 2022 –

Emma Clark Library is encouraging your children to curl up with a few good books this winter through both the Kids and Teen Winter Reading Challenges.

Reading for pleasure is one of the most important lessons for our youth to continue to be lifelong readers and learners. Both programs begin on Monday, January 23 and run through Sunday, March 12. Sign-up is ongoing; there is no need to register by a certain date, as long as it is during that time period. Registration is easily done through Beanstack, an online reading tool and virtual “bookshelf” of all books one has read. There is also an app called Beanstack Tracker.

The Children’s Winter Reading Challenge has a Mo Willems theme and is for babies through 6th graders who live in Three Village. The child may have books read to them or may be reading on their own, depending on their level, and there are specific goals for each reading ability. Starting February 21, all who reach their goal can come into the library to pick up a prize bag, reading certificate, and a ticket for an exciting National Circus Project performance on March 11 from 11:00 a.m. – 12 noon. Additionally, there are raffle prizes, including tickets generously donated by The Rinx, for kids who log into Beanstack each week and complete the weekly activity. For more details and to register for the Children’s Winter Reading Challenge, visit emmaclark.org/kidswinterreading.

This year marks the inaugural Teen Winter Reading Challenge for 7th – 12th graders who reside in Three Village. Junior high and high school students receive a sustainable, literary prize just for registering – a plantable bookmark that is biodegradable and contains wildflower seeds. Plantable bookmarks are made of seed paper, an ecofriendly and zero waste product. The paper is made from post-consumer and post-industrial paper collected from schools and offices and embedded with high-quality wildflower seeds. The seeds are tested for purity to meet the United States Department of Agriculture standard, as well as the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. 70% of the seeds are US native species and all of them are good for our bees.

For each book read, teens will be asked to write a quick “30-Character or More Review.” Once completed, they will be automatically entered into a raffle for two tickets to The Rinx Ice Skating in Hauppauge and Port Jefferson. The more books they read and review, the better their chances of winning a raffle prize. After the Winter Reading Challenge is over, teens who have read and reviewed one book or more are welcome to attend the Winter Reading Wrap-Up Party on Saturday, March 18 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., where they can hang out with other readers, share their favorite books, eat tasty snacks, and decorate a terracotta pot to plant their bookmark in. For more information and to register for the Teen Winter Reading Challenge, visit teen.emmaclark.org/winter-reading-challenge and plant yourself with a good book!

Raffle winners for both Kids and Teen Winter Reading will be announced after March 12.

Emma Clark Library would like to thank The Rinx and The Port Jefferson Photography Club for their donations for the Winter Reading raffle prizes.

Emma Clark Library employees, trustees, and members of their household are not eligible to enter raffles.

Drives for Local Charities to Close Out the Year at Emma Clark Library

Setauket, NY – October 13, 2022 –

Emma Clark Library will be hosting two drives for local charities for the remainder of 2022. The Pajamas for Those in Need Drive will run from October 31 – November 20, and the Share the Warmth Drive will be held from November 21 – December 31.

For the “Pajamas for Those in Need” Drive, Library staff and volunteers will be collecting new pajamas in any size. The “Share the Warmth” Drive, which is an annual tradition, encourages individuals to bring in new or hand-made mittens, scarves, hats, gloves, or socks.  The Library hosts these drives in particular because many homeless shelters will mention that pajamas and socks are the most needed clothing items.

Donation boxes will be located in the Library lobby to the left of the Circulation Desk, and all are welcome to donate (residents or nonresidents) during Library hours.

Annual Library Contest Showcasing Creative Junior High and High School Students in Three Village

Setauket, NY – October 10, 2022 –

Nine years and counting…Emma Clark Library hosts the Helen Stein Shack Picture Book Contest for junior high and high school students, and the annual competition begins this month. Three Village students in grades 7 – 12 are asked to create a picture book for children. The winning teens receive a substantial monetary prize, are recognized at a special ceremony, and have the honor of their original books added to the Library’s Local Focus Collection.

Students in grades 7 – 12 who live in Three Village are invited to showcase their creative artistic and writing talents, whether it be individually or collaboratively with a friend, in creating a children’s picture book by the contest deadline in January. Once the artwork and text are judged, winners are announced in March, and there is a ceremony in the spring honoring the winners and their original books. In addition to Library Trustees and staff, in the past, teachers and top school district administrators, as well as representatives and elected officials from New York State, Suffolk County, and Brookhaven Town, have all been in attendance at the event.

Last year’s Grand Prize winners were Matthew Blumenthal (Grades 7 – 9 category) and Amelia Grant and Anna Grant (Grades 10 – 12 category).  The public may view previous year’s winning entries at emmaclark.org/picturebookaward.

Contest Details: The contest is divided into two grade categories, grades 7 through 9 and grades 10 through 12, with one First Prize Winner and one Second Prize Winner selected from each group.  Each entry can be the work of a single author/illustrator or can be a joint effort between an author and an illustrator.  The picture book entries must be their own original work (both artwork and text).

How to Enter: Those in grades 7 – 12 may obtain an Official Entry Form in-person in the Library’s lobby or online at emmaclark.org/picturebookaward starting October 18, 2022. Included with the form are the contest procedures & guidelines.  They should bring their completed picture book, along with a completed Official Entry Form, to the Children’s Department by the contest deadline, January 31, 2023.

Prizes and Winner Information: Each of the First Prize award recipients will receive $400, and each of the Second Prize award recipients will receive $100 (in the event that a winning entry is a collaboration, the prize will be shared). Winning entries are bound, made into a hardcover book, and added to the Library’s shelves. Additional copies of the winning books will also be available for purchase by family and friends. Winners and their families will be invited to an awards ceremony on Monday, April 24, 2023. All entrants will receive a Certificate of Participation.

The Helen Stein Shack Picture Book Award is given in memory of Helen Stein Shack by her family.  As a teacher, Mrs. Shack was committed to the education of children, and she especially loved literature written for them.  She was a frequent visitor to Emma Clark Library where, even in retirement, she kept current with the latest children’s books.  The Library is grateful to the children of the late Mrs. Shack who have established a substantial endowment with the Library to cover the ongoing cost of the prizes.

Please note:  A maximum of one entry will be accepted per individual. Entries may be a collaboration of no more than one author and one artist/illustrator. Entrants must live within the Three Village Central School District. Emma Clark employees, trustees, and members of their household are not eligible to enter. For a complete listing of the rules, visit emmaclark.org/picturebookaward.
