This two-part workshop will teach you plant-based, nutritional approaches to improving your blood sugar, controlling your blood pressure, and maintaining a healthy weight. Whether you have diabetes or just want to more easily reach your health goals, this class will empower and inspire you with practical information and tasty recipes that will guide you to select plant-based foods for improved chronic disease management and prevention. National Champion runner and 30-year Stony Brook resident Byron Lane leads this engaging workshop that will help you prepare for your first 5k/3.1 mile event. Catholic Health Mobile Outreach Bus (In-Person – Parking Lot)
Thursday, October 9, 10:00 a.m. – 2:o0 p.m.
Registered nurses will provide flu vaccinations, blood pressure, cholesterol, body mass index, and glucose screenings, along with patient education and referrals as needed. The last screening will begin at 1:45 p.m. No appointments are necessary; there are no fees; and health insurance is not required.
Understanding Stroke (In-Person)

The outlook for people who have had a stroke is more hopeful than ever due to advances in stroke awareness, prevention, treatment, education and rehabilitation; however, stroke remains the fifth-leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Early Heart Attack Care (In-Person)

Yvonne Leippert, RN, Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Heart Institute at Stony Brook Medicine, will teach you how to recognize the early warning signs of heart attack and what steps you can take to help save a life. HIICAP Health Insurance Information Counseling & Assistance Program – A volunteer from the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program will meet with seniors by phone for help with Medicare health insurance information and forms.

Blood Pressure Monitor Kits
Would you like to monitor your blood pressure at home? We offer patrons the opportunity to borrow a blood pressure monitor for a period of 28 days. Along with the monitor, we will provide patrons with information on how to have a healthy blood pressure level, how to find heart healthy recipes and how to find follow up information on blood pressure self-monitoring.
The cuffs come in three sizes:
– Large
– Standard
– Small
Plus, one talking monitor!
Note: you cannot place a hold for these items. They must be picked up from and returned to the Emma Clark Library Circulation Desk. More info and check availability here.
