10 Years of the Kids Bookmark Contest at Emma Clark Library

Setauket, NY – February 7, 2025 –

Emma Clark Library’s annual Kids Bookmark Contest has reached a big milestone – elementary-aged children living in the Three Village Central School District have been designing original bookmarks for library patrons for ten years of this beloved contest.

The community enthusiasm for this contest has been amazing with over 500 entries in the past decade. Winners receive a trophy and the incredible honor of having their bookmarks professionally printed and available for the community throughout the year. This year, in celebration of the tenth anniversary of the contest, there will be an additional special prize.

To pick up an Official Entry Form and Bookmark Template, kids may stop by the Children’s Reference Desk or download the form at emmaclark.org/bookmarkcontest. There is a limit of 1 entry per child. The entry deadline is March 31, 2025. Winners will be chosen in three categories (K – 2, 3^rd & 4^th, and 5^th & 6^th grades) and announced on May 1, 2025. All contestants’ entries will be displayed in the Children’s Department for visitors to view during the month of May.

Last year’s winners were Kelly Y. (Minnesauke Elementary) in the grades K – 2 category; Catherine Y. (Minnesauke Elementary) in the grades 3 & 4 category; and Mason O. (Mount Elementary) in the grades 5 & 6 category.

For Parents

Talking About Tragedy and Coping with Grief for Parents
Presented by the Response Crisis Center of LI
Tuesday, February 25, 2025. 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Learn age-appropriate ways to talk about personal, communal, and global tragedy with children and teens, while also holding space for your own emotions.

This workshop will include:

Cross-cultural bereavement practices
Common cliches
Damaging terminology
Societal impact of tragedy on a community

Includes a Q&A. Plus, the Library’s SBU Social Work Intern Stephanie Szabo will assist and speak with attendees during and after the program.

For Teens (Grades 7 – 12)

Contending with Grief
Presented by the Response Crisis Center of LI
Saturday, March 1, 2025. 3:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Learn how to cope with personal, communal, and global tragedies, including:

Ways grief manifests and how it can change over time under different circumstances
How to hold space for yourself as you grieve
How to interact with peers who are mourning
How community-wide tragedies can impact people in all different ways.

Includes a Q&A. Plus, the Library’s SBU Social Work Intern Stephanie Szabo will be available to assist and speak with attendees during and after the program.

Mandatory Course for Boaters

The New York State Safe Boating Course is now mandatory for anyone, regardless of age, who operates a boat, watercraft or Jet Ski in NY State, and we’re offering it here at Emma Clark Library.

After completing this course, you will receive a New York State Safe Boating Certificate.

Thursday, June 5 and Friday, June 6, 4:30 – 8:30 p.m. (In-Person) Please note this class is now wait list only.

All classes are open to Adults, Teens, and Tweens (Ages 10+). Taught by New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation. In this two-part, 8-hour course, Captain Rich Cloonan will teach the basic principles of safe and responsible boating.

Students must be at least 10 years old to attend the course and must attend both class sessions to receive certification. This class is open to both residents and nonresidents. The $40 per person materials fee must be paid to the instructor at the first class (pay with cash or Venmo).

Note: All courses are open to anyone in the state, not just local residents. If this course does not fit your schedule, or if all spots are filled, Three Village patrons may register for NY State Safe Boating classes held at other locations. Click here for more information.

Help Us Recycle & Earn a Bench – Bin Outside the Library!

The building is temporarily closed, but you can still recycling with us! The bin is now located outside the Library.

In collaboration with Suffolk Library System, we’re participating in the NexTrex Community Recycling Challenge. Simply deposit your plastic film (e.g. plastic bags, bread bags, etc.) in the bin located in the Library’s vestibule.

If our community collects & recycles 1,000+ pounds in a year, the Library will receive a free bench made from these materials!

Navy Seal Museum Added to Library’s Museum Pass Collection

Setauket, NY – January 15, 2025 –

Emma Clark has recently added The LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum to the Library’s widely used Museum Pass Collection.

This interactive museum, located in West Sayville, is dedicated to the commemoration and storytelling of the U.S. Navy SEAL community and includes a movie theater and SEAL simulation ride. Three Village residents may borrow a pass for free admission for 2 adults and 4 children (under 18 years old). To reserve a pass, Library cardholders may visit emmaclark.org/museum-passes. This pass is “Print & Go”, which means patrons may print it from any computer (there is no need to pick up a physical pass from the library).

The LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum complements the nearby Long Island Maritime Museum, which is also located in West Sayville and a part of Emma Clark’s Museum Pass Collection.

In 2024, there were 2,615 free museum visits for Three Village residents, thanks to Emma Clark Library’s Museum Pass collection. The program features close to 40 museums, gardens, historic sites, family-friendly attractions, and cultural institutions on Long Island and in New York City.

Those who borrow passes through Emma Clark’s Museum Pass program are encouraged to share their adventures on social media with the hashtag #EmmaTakesMePlaces. Emma Clark Library may be found on Facebook @emmaclarklibrary and Instagram @emmaclarklibrary.

The LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum tells the story, sacrifices, and legacies of the Special Operators of Naval Special Warfare Command from the frogman and Underwater Demolition teams of WWII and Korea to the birth of the SEALs in Vietnam, the War on Terror, Operation Redwings, and an exhibition hall dedicated solely to the SEAL Training program. There are seven exhibition halls including a movie theater and a SEAL simulation ride to give the public a glimpse into the stories and lives of these very special men and heroes.
