4A – Classes and Events Designed for Special Needs Adults

We’re introducing a new pilot program, “All Adults, All Abilities” (or “4A”), classes and events designed for adults with sensory issues, those on the autism spectrum, or those who have other special needs. These activities will be led by teachers and performers who are trained in accessible and inclusive programming.

Library patrons have expressed an interest in programming where adults and their aides or caregivers can enjoy themselves and engage in a relaxed and comfortable environment that meets their developmental needs. Thanks to the generous support from Senator John J. Flanagan and Assemblyman Steve Englebright, we’re launching this pilot program that will offer fun, educational, and relevant programs that meet the needs of “All Adults, All Abilities.”

“We’re grateful to Senator Flanagan and Assemblyman Englebright for funding that allows us to introduce this important new initiative, which we hope will become an ongoing series,” says Library Director Ted Gutmann. “The Library is uniquely positioned to serve the needs of a wide spectrum of individuals, and this program further strengthens the Library’s commitment to inclusiveness.”

Specifically, for the fall, on Wednesday, October 10 there will be a crafting class in which participants create a Halloween-themed wreath and enjoy fall treats. On Thursday, November 8, students will make candles using different colors and patterns. These classes and events are geared towards adults with special needs, but they are open to all interested adults. Aides or caregivers must accompany participants. Non-residents are also welcome. Also, adult volunteers may be needed to assist during these classes. Those who are willing and available to help may contact our adult volunteer coordinator, Carolyn Emerson at Carolyn@emmaclark.org.

In conjunction with the new 4A initiative, all public computers in the Library now provide access to a collection of recommended special education websites for both children and adults.

No one should be prevented from or feel uncomfortable using the Library. It is a place for everyone to learn and feel accomplished, as well as share pleasant and meaningful experiences. This new program will help to ensure that the Emma Clark Library continues to enrich lives and remains a place where everyone in the community belongs.

We’re once again participating in The Great Give Back, a Suffolk Cooperative Library System initiative to provide opportunities for library patrons to participate in meaningful, service-oriented activities. Ours is a Pet theme… help support our furry friends!

For Everyone

Pet Supplies Drive, October 7 – November 10, 2024
We’re collecting new pet supplies (food, blankets, leashes, cleaning supplies, etc.) in the Library lobby to be donated to local organizations that help pets in need. All are welcome to donate (residents or non-residents) during Library hours.

For Kids (Grades 3 – 6)

Dog or Cat Toy “Take & Make”
Create a dog or cat toy at home while earning 1 hour of community service credit.

Click here to register starting 9/16 to reserve your Cat Kit OR Click here to register starting 9/16 to reserve your Dog Kit. Then come and pick it up! Return it to the Children’s Library by Saturday, October 19, 2024 and we’ll donate them to a local animal shelter. One dog or cat kit per child, please.

Knotted Fleece Blankets for Shelter Pets (“Take & Make”)
Click here to register starting 9/17 to reserve your kit. Pick up Monday, October 7 through Friday, October 11, 2024. Instructions provided via email. Two hours of community service credit will be earned upon return of the completed project.

“Binge Boxes”

Borrow a “Binge Box” for a movie marathon! Each box includes 4 – 6 DVDs that share themes such as “Romantic Comedies”, “Based on a Book”, “Sports on Screen”, “Courtroom Drama”, “Family Movie Night”, “Fright Night”, “Classic Films”, “Marvel Superheroes”, and “British Favorites,” among others.

Binge Boxes are perfect for when you are stuck inside (sick days, snow days, or rainy days!), sleepovers, movie nights, holiday weekends, staycations, or when you just want to be lazy and watch movies all day. Or some might want to check out a mini-movie collection to enhance their knowledge of famous films.

Just like movies, the Binge Boxes may be borrowed for up to 7 days and may be renewed up to 6 times unless it has been reserved by someone else.

Now you can effortlessly catch up on the movies you always wanted to watch…hours of entertainment in one compact box!

Imagination Playground Blocks are here

We have new Imagination Playground blocks in our Children’s Department! The blocks will be in our program room for kids to play with whenever a class is not in session.

We believe in learning through play and encouraging resources that spark creativity, movement, and social interaction. Kids may build anything they choose and transform the space into their own world. It’s great for groups of kids or an individual child. Come on down and play!
