Two Big Events in The Children’s Department at Emma Clark This Winter

Setauket, NY – January 10, 2019 –

Are your kids saying they’re bored? Fight the winter blues, and come to Emma Clark Library for two special events for children of all ages.

Kick off Super Bowl weekend with football-themed festivities on Saturday, February 2.  Simply drop in the Children’s Department at Emma Clark Library between the hours of 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Play games and enter for a chance to win a special raffle prize. The Library staff encourages visitors to wear a shirt or jersey with their favorite football team (but this is not required). Be sure to catch the fun!

During the school’s winter break, Emma Clark will once again be participating in “Take Your Child to the Library Day”, an international movement to raise awareness for libraries.  Stop by on Wednesday, February 20 between 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. for carnival games, face painting, temporary tattoos, balloon sculpting, crafts and more.

Additionally, in keeping with the festivities of “Take Your Child to the Library Day”, each new library card sign-up on February 20 will be entered in a raffle.  You’re never too young for a library card!  Parents can get a card for their young one as soon as they are born and immediately start enjoying the Library’s resources, such as the “Time for Baby” classes.

According to the American Library Association, Americans go to libraries more than three times as frequently as they go to the movies.  “Take Your Child to the Library Day” showcases the significance of libraries as a community hub, a foundation of education, and a source of entertainment and enrichment.  This event encourages parents to take full advantage of their local library and emphasizes the importance of libraries to our future generation.

There is no registration for either of these events, and families with kids of all ages (residents or nonresidents) are welcome. Meet up with friends – or make new ones – at Emma Clark!

If you have any questions, please email kids@emmaclark.org or call 631.941.4080 ext. 123.

The Emma S. Clark Memorial Library, located at 120 Main Street in Setauket and on the web at www.emmaclark.org, provides public library service to all residents of the Three Village Central School District.

Baby, It’s Cold Outside!

Need some ideas of what to do when it’s freezing outdoors? You’re in the right place!

– Come to the Library to play – We gave games, toys, and puzzles for all ages, Playstix, and of course the popular train table. Osmo (“Play Beyond the Screen”) is always available for kids and is a combination of a digital experience and tangible play. We also have Imagination Playground (“Big Blue Blocks”) in our program room for kids to play with, whenever a class is not in session.

– Borrow a Playaway Launchpad for your child – These are tablets pre-loaded with educational apps appropriate for your kid. They are 100% secure and do not have Internet connectivity.  Patrons do not have to install parental controls or worry about their children being exposed to unintended or inappropriate content. They now have new, sturdier cases too. Look for the bright orange packaging in the Children’s Department!

– Stay inside and watch movies

    • Our new “Binge Boxes” include 4 – 6 DVDs that share themes such as “Romantic Comedies”, “Based on a Book”, “Sports on Screen”, “Courtroom Drama”, “Family Movie Night”, “Fright Night”, “Classic Films”, “Marvel Superheroes”, and “British Favorites.” You can find them in main reading room.
    • Stream movies directly to your computer, phone, tablet or smart TV through Hoopla or KanopyClick here to get started.

And of course, read a book! (We couldn’t be the Library and not mention that!)

Imagination Playground Blocks are here

Imagination Playground Blocks

We have new Imagination Playground blocks in our Children’s Department!  The blocks will be in our program room for kids to play with whenever a class is not in session.

We believe in learning through play and encouraging resources that spark creativity, movement, and social interaction.  Kids may build anything they choose and transform the space into their own world.  It’s great for groups of kids or an individual child.  Come on down and play!

Do you have a new or emergent reader at home?  Here at Emma Clark Library we have a variety of useful and fun resources for your child that can help improve their literacy skills:

At Home

Search for books on your child’s reading level.  Use a SUBJECT search and type “Leveled reading, level___” (fill in the blank with your child’s reading level).  Then just request that book for pick-up at the library!

– Visit our website for free access to eBooks!  Tumble Books for Kids and Sesame Street eBooks are animated, talking picture book libraries that help kids learn to read and build vocabulary in an interactive format.

Play award-winning ABCmouse for free!  Interactive books, educational games, puzzles, and more for ages 2 – 6+.  You can even log in and track your child’s progress. Find ABCmouse and get instructions here.

In the Library

Browse our special section with books by color-coded by reading level so that you can easily find a book for your child to read.

Bring your child in to read to a trained therapy dog.  These dogs have been trained to sit quietly and listen.  Call 941.4080 ext. 123 and pick a specific date and time.  All reading levels welcome!
