Your Child Learning to Read? We Can Help!

Do you have a new or emergent reader at home? Here at Emma Clark Library we have a variety of useful and fun resources for your child that can help improve their literacy skills:
At Home
– Search for books on your child’s reading level. Use a SUBJECT search and type “Leveled reading, level___” (fill in the blank with your child’s reading level). Then just request that book for pick-up at the library!
– Visit our website for free access to eBooks! Tumble Books for Kids and Sesame Street eBooks are animated, talking picture book libraries that help kids learn to read and build vocabulary in an interactive format.
– Play award-winning ABCmouse for free! Interactive books, educational games, puzzles, and more for ages 2 – 6+. You can even log in and track your child’s progress. Find ABCmouse and get instructions here.
In the Library
– Browse our special section with books by color-coded by reading level so that you can easily find a book for your child to read.
– Bring your child in to read to a trained therapy dog. These dogs have been trained to sit quietly and listen. Call 941.4080 ext. 123 and pick a specific date and time. All reading levels welcome!

SRC Decoration Photos – Deadline 3/31

This summer’s theme is “Color Your World”, and we’re once again featuring the children of our community throughout our themed decorations!
To participate, we ask that you submit 3 headshots of your child.
- Photos should be of babies to those entering 5th grade.
- Please photograph your child wearing their favorite color. Shirts or dresses should be a solid color, free of patterns, graphics, and writing.
- We will crop the photos of your child to include only their head, shoulders and mid chest.
- Please no group photos. Each child’s picture should be as an individual.
- All images that are used will be displayed for the entire year.
Photos should be emailed to kids@emmaclark.org. Please include the child’s full name and age. The deadline for submitting photos is Monday, March 31, 2025 (no photos will be accepted after this date).
We ask that your photos look similar to these images:
- You may use a smartphone, however if you have a digital camera the print-outs will be clearer.
- Please submit high-quality JPEG or TIFF files.
- When taking photos:
- Shoot full face including head, shoulders and mid chest.
- The brighter the picture, the better.
- If it’s a sunny day, shoot pictures in the shade to avoid shadow.
- Take the picture with the sun behind the photographer.

Kids Winter Reading – Not too late!

Let’s get YETI to read!
From Babies to 6th grade, join our Kids Winter Reading Challenge! It runs from Monday, January 13 – Sunday, March 2, 2025. Whether your child is being read to or reading on their own, this program is a great incentive. When kids report the books that they’ve read, it gives them confidence and encourages a lifelong love of reading.
Click here to register through Beanstack, our online reading tool. There is also an app (Beanstack Tracker).
Pre-Readers: For children who have books read to them. Goal is at least 10 books with their grown-up.
New Readers: For children who are just starting or have only recently begun to read by themselves. Goal is at least 5 books on their reading level.
Confident Readers: For children who read on their own. Goal is at least 2 books on your reading level.
When your child has completed their goal, they will earn an electronic raffle ticket for a chance to win the special Yeti prize (a plush Yeti, a Yeti board game, & tickets to the Rinx).
Beginning Monday, Feb. 10, all kids who reach their goal can come into the Library to pick up their prize bag and reading certificate.
Winter Reading Club ends on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
Questions? Email kids@emmaclark.org or call 631.941.4080 ext. 123.
Emma Clark employees, trustees, and members of their household are not eligible to enter raffles.
***A big thank you to The Rinx for their continued support with a donation of tickets for our Kids & Teen Winter Reading raffle prizes.
Video Games Now in Kids Dept!

We’re pleased to announce our new Video Game Collection in the Children’s Department…available NOW! This is in addition to the new Video Game Collection rolled out in the Teen Department this past summer.
Video and computer game playing, when practiced in moderation, has many benefits. While kids are gaming, they are also learning how to collaborate in a team, strategize, explore, make decisions, and take risks. The games help kids prepare for today’s fast-paced digital world. Video games can be fun and motivating, and along with books and traditional games, they are another method of educating our youth in the 21st century.
We have games for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii, WiiU, Xbox360, and Xbox One, with popular titles such as Super Mario, Disney, Sesame Street, Lego, and EA Sports. Like movies, video games circulate for one week and may be renewed as long as no one else has reserved the game.
You may recommend games for the library to purchase; we’ll be accepting suggestions for games rated T or lower for both the Teen and Children’s Departments.
We also hold special Minecraft, Xbox, and WiiU programs throughout the year for both kids and teens in the Technology Center. All programs may be found in the printed newsletter, and you may register for them online under Programs.
If you have any questions about the new Video Game Collections, you may contact teens@emmaclark.org or kids@emmaclark.org.
Playaway Launchpads

Playaway Launchpads, which we started offering to young patrons in July 2015, are kids-only learning tablets that circulate just like a book or movie. The tablets are pre-loaded with educational apps appropriate for your child.
These tablets come in fun, bright orange packaging, a charging cord (with both USB and AC adapters), and a durable case, perfect for little hands. There are currently over 25 tablets available, each pre-loaded with high-quality, interactive learning apps geared towards a particular subject area, including math, science, and language arts, and each with a different theme, such as pizza, colors, and monkeys. The tablets are also divided by age group: 3 – 5, 5 – 7, 8 – 10, and 10+ years. They are easy to use and come ready to play with award-winning apps.
Most importantly, these devices are 100% secure and do not have Internet connectivity. Patrons do not have to install parental controls or worry about their children being exposed to unintended or inappropriate content.
To reserve a Playaway Launchpad, simply click here. Choose a tablet at the appropriate age level and with a theme that your child will enjoy. Once requested, you may pick it up in the Circulation Desk.
If you have any questions about the Playaway Launchpads, you may contact kids@emmaclark.org or 631.941.4080 ext. 123.
