Things to do from home, thanks to your library card
Some things you can do from home, thanks to your library card!
– Download an eBook or eAudiobook through OverDrive
– Watch a movie that you streamed through Kanopy or Hoopla
– Have a dance party in your living room! Free music (that you never have to “return”) through Hoopla
– Learn a new language (& daydream about that trip you’ve always wanted to take) with Pronunciator
– Brush up on your skills or learn new ones with Hoonuit or Universal Class. These are online learning platforms, each with over 500 video classes. Hoonuit has tutorials software applications, including Microsoft Word and Excel, Adobe Photoshop and Dreamweaver, Final Cut Pro, Social Media, WordPress, GoogleDocs and more. Universal Class has a multitude of topics such as accounting, career training, health & medicine, DIY, medical billing, pet care, psychology, real estate, special education, and test preparation, just to name a few.
– Get crafty with CreativeBug
– Read up on your local history and find out what the “Setauket Spies” did during the American Revolution.
– Research that big purchase. Consumer Reports is free with your library card.
– Do your taxes. It’s not fun, but it IS productive. Links to tax forms are available right on the library’s website.
– Download free digital magazines through Flipster or RB Digital
– Check out a museum from your home! Click here for a handy list of museums with virtual tours.
What to do with the kids?
– Take them on an adventure – learn about science, nature, culture, archaeology, and space through National Geographic Kids.
– Learn a new language through games and stories (they won’t even realize they’re learning!) through Muzzy.
– Check out more than 200 countries and all U.S. states on the CultureGrams Kids Edition. There are maps, videos, photos, interviews, biographies, recipes, flags, graphs, tables, and more!
– Read an eBook. Tumble Books for Kids and Sesame Street eBooks are animated, talking picture book libraries that help kids learn to read and build vocabulary in an interactive format.

😄No pressure…come into the Library as little or as much as you’d like!
😄Reach your goal and receive a prize bag! ALL kids who reach their goal receive a prize bag!
😄And for the parents – when kids report the books that they’ve read, it gives them confidence and encourages a lifelong love of reading.
Now the details:
Click here to register. It’s through Beanstack (same online program as Summer Reading). Or call us at 631-941-4080, ext. 123. Registration is on-going throughout January & February, so don’t worry if you’re “late” to register. Read any books you want and log them in by February 28. For kids birth – 6th grade.
Here are your Dr. Seuss-themed goals:
“Thing 1 & Thing 2” – Pre-Readers: for the children that have books read to them. Your goal will be to read at least 10 books with your grownup.
“Green Eggs & Ham-ers” – New Readers: for the children that are just starting or have only recently begun to read by themselves. Your goal will be to read at least 5 books on your reading level.
“The Grinches” – Confident Readers: for the children that read on their own. Your goal will be to read at least 2 books on your reading level.
All kids who reach their goal…starting Tuesday, February 16, come in and pick up a prize bag!
We also have 2 raffle prizes. Earn an electronic raffle ticket for each week you log in to your Beanstack account and complete the weekly activity. WRC ends on Sunday, Feb. 28. Raffle prize winners will be announced on Monday, Mar. 1.

New Online Learning
The foundation of any library is its role as a reputable & trustworthy educational resource; for a 21st century library, that includes online learning. We’ve recently expanded our online learning collection with three new, online platforms. You’ll be able to watch free, high-quality instructional videos from anywhere, whether at home or in the Library.
– Hoonuit (pronounced “Who-Knew-It”) – on-demand video training for more than 500 software applications, including Microsoft Word and Excel, Adobe Photoshop and Dreamweaver, Final Cut Pro, Social Media, WordPress, GoogleDocs and more. These short tutorials are perfect for those looking for a “snip-it” of information.
– Universal Class – an online learning platform with in-depth courses on a wide-variety of subjects. The classes may be taken at the user’s pace, and there is also the benefit of interacting with a live instructor via email. There are over 500 courses on a multitude of topics such as accounting, career training, health & medicine, DIY, medical billing, pet care, psychology, real estate, special education, and test preparation, just to name a few.
– CreativeBug – an arts & crafts instructional resource with over 1,000 award-winning video classes taught by recognized design experts and artists. Whether a person is making a collage, sewing, knitting, using the Cricut machine, or working on any other arts and crafts project, CreativeBug is sure to help.
These new, online learning resource may be accessed anytime and from anywhere at emmaclark.org/you-beyond.

“Predicting the Presidential Election” – Lecture on 12/5/19 – Facebook Live Stream
Due to the popularity of our sold out lecture, “Predicting the Presidential Election”, we live streamed it on our Facebook page on Thursday, December 5 at 7:00 p.m.

A bit about the lecture:
Helmut Norpoth, Professor in the Department of Political Science at Stony Brook University, accurately predicted with his primary model Donald Trump’s victory in the last presidential election as early as February 2016. He will explain how the model worked, and he will offer a tentative forecast of the 2020 election outcome.

Eyeglass Recycling
We’re collecting eyeglasses that we’ll donate to the Suffolk Cooperative Library System’s services for the sight-impaired.
The collection box is located in the Library’s lobby. All are welcome to recycle their un-needed glasses during Library hours.
